CHAPTER 13

Hank

THE PLAN

Hank had almost gotten used to the scent of gardenias. The sweet, floral smell that was totally foreign to the forest wasn’t quite as maddening anymore. He could smell it from twenty-five paces—more if he stood downwind.

At first, he’d used it as a warning; now it was just another part of having Jan near, one he easily accepted.

The taste of her he’d gotten that still lingered on his tongue was far more maddening, and not as easily dismissed. Not to mention the indescribable scent of her essence—a unique aroma that had etched itself onto every part of him.

He hadn’t needed her to tell him what happened when she went back to the city—he could see it in her eyes. The tears that stopped flowing when he kissed her resumed moments later.

She’d made it inside the station and collapsed on the couch, still half naked. Hank stripped away what remained of her soaked clothing and spread his blanket over her. Within moments, exhaustion took her, but Hank knew it wasn’t the orgasms that had drained Jan’s energy—it was the meeting in the city.

He didn’t know the details, but he knew enough. He’d expected whatever appeal she made to her bosses to fail.

Hank went to his beat-up coffee maker and started brewing a fresh batch.

Sleep was a luxury he couldn’t indulge in that night; he had to consider what few options he had left.

There was no chance of Jan helping him and the other shifters hold off the contractor’s advance. Progress would come the way it always had—at the expense of everyone and everything in its path.

When Hank had asked Jan for help, he’d known that was the most likely outcome, but that did nothing to stop the bile from rising in his throat.

The shifter tribes and clans in the area respected him well enough, but he wasn’t one of them.

Hank was an outsider, a rogue without a clan to call his own.

Worse, he was an ally of men in the eyes of some of the shifters. They would forever be suspicious of him, forever questioning his motives and his loyalty.

They tolerated his presence because he was a fellow shifter, but their respect would only go so far, and not nearly far enough to make them listen to his words.

They would follow their Alphas, and hundreds of years of murder at the hands of clueless or frightened humans wouldn’t inspire the Alphas to give up without a fight.

Some of them would want blood—human blood, shifter blood—it didn’t matter as long as there was something to mark the fight, some small way for the shifters of Nevada County to finally make their presence felt.

Which really left Hank with only one option…

By the time the first rays of daylight filtered down to his window, Hank knew what needed to be done about the development, but a solution to the problem of Jan Honeycutt remained just beyond his grasp.

The fiery realtor occupied his thoughts more and more. He couldn’t say exactly when it
